1. Scan a large, detailed image at high resolution. We used an eighteenth-century engraving that is approximately 10 x 14 inches, purchased from a print shop; we scanned it at 150%.
2. Find a short, provocative text to pair with the image.
3. Working in an 8-x-8-inch square, isolate part of the image and combine it with the text. The text and image should be on more or less equal grounds, one illuminating and supporting the other. The text is not simply a caption for the image, but an active element and focal point. Use the image to bring attention to the text, and vice versa. Ask questions as you work: Is the picture flat or three-dimensional? How does it look upside down? How can lines, shapes, and planes in the image suggest ways to position and align the text?
