Design Problem 1

1. In Illustrator, create a grid of dots, 15 x 15. Or, download our pdf an edit file in Illustrator.

2. Use a red line to connect the dots in three differents ways, creating three different kinds of network. Centralized Networks include pyramids and trees, where all power issues from a common point. A decentralized network has a spine with radiating elements, as in an interstate highway system. A distributed network has a node-to-node relationships with no spine and no center. The Internet is a distributed network peppered with concentrated nodes of connectivity.

3. Think about the types of natural and social systems that your diagrams might describe. A food chain, a city plan, and the pathway of a disease are all networks that can be described graphically with points and lines.
